Nationwide Success with 140,000 Tourists! Daejeon Bread Festival

On October 28-29, Daejeon's Soje-dong Cafe Street and Daedong Stream area were filled with a feast of bread. The '2024 Daejeon Bread Festival' was a huge success, welcoming over 140,000 visitors. This figure far surpasses last year's record of 120,000 visitors at Seodaejeon Park, proving the growing popularity of the Daejeon Bread Festival.

Now in its 4th year, the festival has become even more abundant under the organization and sponsorship of the Daejeon Tourism Corporation, with support from Daejeon Metropolitan City, Dong-gu Office, Daejeon Confectionery Association, Daejeon Metropolitan City Branch, and Sungsimdang. This year, 81 bakeries participated, 12 more than last year, including 71 from Daejeon and 10 from across the country, with Sungsimdang, the region's pride, among them.

The festival kicked off with dazzling congratulatory performances by K-POP artists, followed by a 10-meter-long giant baguette-cutting demonstration that captivated the audience. Various programs, such as hands-on bread jam-making experiences, provided unforgettable memories for visitors.

Soje-dong, the festival venue, is itself a page of history. Formed in 1905 with the opening of the Gyeongbu Line railway, this area, which preserves the history of the railway residential village, developed into a distribution center for flour that entered as U.S. relief food after the Korean War. As flour mills were established around Daejeon Station, foods using flour became Daejeon's representative cuisine, making Daejeon famous for its delicious kalguksu (handmade chopped noodles) and bread today.

Based on this rich history and tradition, the Daejeon Bread Festival has now established itself as a representative festival of Daejeon. By attracting over 140,000 tourists, it plays a crucial role in promoting Daejeon's taste, history, and culture nationwide. We look forward to the continued growth of the Daejeon Bread Festival, becoming an event that food enthusiasts across the country eagerly anticipate.
