‘Classical Scholar Daejeon Tour’: A Glimpse into Korea’s Confucian Culture

Daejeon City Tour offers a unique program for travelers visiting Daejeon, allowing them to explore various parts of the city. Operating from Tuesday to Sunday, the tour departs daily from Daejeon Station and City Hall Station, following a different route. The program covers various themes, including history, culture, wellness, and science. Accompanied by cultural tourism interpreters, participants can delve into Daejeon’s diverse stories and the history behind its tourist attractions. One of the standout tours, the ‘Classical Scholar Daejeon Tour,’ operates every Tuesday and visits sites steeped in Korea’s Confucian thought. The tour proceeds from Daejeon Station and City Hall to Root Park, the Korean Genealogy Museum, the Sangso-dong Forest Bathing Park, and ends at the Uam Historical Park.

Root Park is where visitors can learn about the origins of Korean surnames, which are prefixes to names indicating familial lineage. The Korean Genealogy Museum is the only museum in Korea dedicated to genealogy. It showcases a variety of artifacts related to the structure, history, and traditional culture of family life in Korea.

Sangso-dong Forest Bathing Park is one of Daejeon’s premier wellness destinations, offering visitors a chance to relax in nature. The park features numerous stone towers, creating an exotic atmosphere and providing spaces for visitors to build their own stone towers.

Uam Historical Park is where Uam Song Si-yeol, one of Daejeon's great Confucian scholars, pursued his studies. This park was established to honor and preserve the legacy of Song Si-yeol, who significantly contributed to the flourishing of Confucian thought in late Joseon Korea. The park, which reopened as a historical site on April 17, 1998, includes re-creations of buildings such as a seowon (Confucian academy) and a museum of artifacts spanning over 16,000 pyeong.
